dominant pop cultures

isnt it just remarkable how deeply influenced global society is by american pop culture.the MTV and mcdonaldization of the world is just amazing.whats more its taken ten years to reach this point.i was watching this piece about disney world opening in hong kong and how commentators were predicting doom and gloom for its financial prospects.but the remarkable point about say this particular example is that people in hongkong will get a piece of small town fantasy america in their backyard with a bit of chinese flavor.instead of hamburgers there will be i dunno kungpao chicken and so on.but the reason the commentators were so sceptical about the whole project was that china had its own pop culture which was different from america and walt disney etc.that might be fine but if you think about it other than the legendary martial arts films asian pop culture is heavily influenced by america.listen to their songs and videos, the lingo might be different but the themes are influenced by america.look at pakistani music scene which is really amazing and we see an explosion of rock groups.we look at our pop singers and the beats they are using are generally western inspired.fine there are exceptions but i dunno. shopping malls, skyscrapers, capitalism etc are all examples of american exports hugely admired and being copioed in a hurry.i think the ability of an american or western brand to fit in another society is ingenious.take pizza hut in pakistan for eg.my favorite pizza is the chicken tikka one.in india theyve got all kind off veggie products.in conclusion i dunno whether this is good or bad.will it fade out or not.but given the immense animosity people all over the world feel for america its remarkable how theyre pop culture/way of life keeps marching on and conquering new lands.

the wonders media can do...the art of influencing before u even know it. its not just in fashion and food but also in personality...most girls i see around me are trying to be like some hollywood icon. the way they talk walk...toooo much! media is not only taking over what we eat and listen to but also who we are ...individuality is a scarce thing now. pink floyd and other artists saw it already coming. it happened in the west long time before its doing to us...another brick in the wall?...
i would love to share this book with u that has a chapter that talks about how media influences are thinking...its called "ways of seeing". many artits in the 60's critisised homogonisation of people through their work-saba

The biggest and the most voluntary adoption of an apparently western trend seems to be in the field of friendships. The "Friends" way of life has gained currency so intrinsically it's becoming hard to believe that has the show not aired interaction between friends would be peppered with other jokes, other priorities. Perhaps I'm giving Friends too much credit but (specially in the younger circle where I suppose friendships haven't reached the jelloed-for-life stage) lines are said, comments are made and actions done with the Friends yardstick in mind.

hey saba thx id love to read that book.ure right.media is very all pervasive and powerful these days.its remarkable how sterotypes have been formed and perpetuated.but i totally agree with shahan."we will see a gradual evolution of a "global" culture which will resemble the "western" culture significantly but will have bits and pieces borrowed from every part of the world."very true.

moizza i think u definetely have a point about friends or even shows like beverley hills 90210 and OC(these days).society or at least nd i hate saying this upper strata of society's evolution is heavily influenced by such shows.

i was thinking about how bollywood the worlds largest film industry has lately been totally remodelled on the lines of hollywood.most of the movies are copies of hollywood ones and with the intro of sex, flesh and drugs todays indian movie is totally unrelatable to those made a decade or so ago.obviously im generalising.gone are the days when raj meets simran, simran finds raj obnoxious yet after a while they fall in love.parents are sworn enemies for centuries.heart ache, tears and finally one big happy family.anyway its weird.

Nowadays people think that 'development' or 'improvement' is synonymous with being more and more like the West.
It's true that it swings both ways with the indian restaurants and the sushi and even with clothing... (this summer all of toronto was wearing khusas!!) .. but not with culture and the way we live our lives.. that I think is one-sided. We love emulating the West, consciously or unconsciously, in the way we live our lives. Their standards have become our standards.. for example, the 'perfect body' as seen in hollywood movies and on other shows.
I'm not saying we shouldn't be influenced by the west at all - that would be impossible, just like it's impossible for them not to be influenced by eastern things.. but it'll be really sad if we start identifying more with the West than with our own culture and stuff. For example, more with Friends and the OC than with our own Pakistani plays, if anyone even watches them!

i suppose at the end of the day, its all about what sells. Since politics, food, war, survival and everything else is about business and business is about making money. On the surface western hypes over-ride others, but from what i can reason, its simply because right now they have the resources to target larger audiences with greater weight, to produce hyper demand, and the resources to ultimately satisfy that demand.

Also, there is not one over riding culture in the US. Even american pop culture, is really a collage of hundreds of races and race contributions. May be the nature of it simply appeals more to more people globally.

Jarrar, I enjoy rambling pointlessly in my blog. Thanks for the comment :)

yeah but frankly i still havent decided whthere its good or bad.obviously theres alot of stuff out there tht one should learn from and be inspired by.however its also very important for us to retain some of our traditions as well.but i agree america is a kind of melting pot.very distinct society in the history of mankind.theres no uniform American culture.i guess everything they do stems form life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.cant be so bad then can it?and amal my pleasure cos ure "pointless ramblings" are beautifully articualted.

hey jarrar. i see a new not-so-pointless ramble on your blog everytime i come here. thanks for your comment on mine. being involved in music myself, i can only say that art is truly subjective, no one is best at it and no one leads. i mean considering The Moody Blues used 'eastern village sounds' like the 'chaki' (that grinds flour) in their music ... and reggae music is an entire genre taken from african origin; one can only imagine how much music has been passed along from culture to culture. anyway, i found another random rant that you might want to comment on. check it out:

1.The U S OF A is THE superpower and like the most popular girl in high school who you suck up to, bitch about and secretly want to be like, the world has a love hate relationship with America and all things American...we criticize them yet we want to be like them

2. Media, “the resources to target large audiences” and the forces of globalization: together create a powerful medium for the dissemination of American pop culture as a universal brand- the do’s don’t’s/whats in whats out/how you should look/what is success/what is beauty and so on. They influence our hearts and minds without many of us ever even finding out or questioning why we want to buy a certain bag or eat a certain burger or work in a certain institution.

3. Occident/orient like relationship so it “swings both ways” as they see everything eastern as homogenous/exotic/mysterious

4. Who knows if this is good or bad...I guess it’s a lil bit of both...we should incorporate the best from America and not the worst. By best I mean their emphasis on human rights/womens rights/charity/animal rights/accountability/work ethic and by worst I mean racism/sexism/treatment of parents and elders/hypocrisy/mini skits and tube tops...I KNOW I KNOW im generalizing but hey this is just my humble opinion!!
